Where are they based?

Lithotherm originated in Austria but are now based near Frankfurt in Western Germany.

When were they established?

The company started in 1998 in Bregenz, Austria but have since moved production near to Frankfurt .

What are the characteristics of their products?

The Lithotherm products are innovative, simple but above all time, energy and labour saving.

The original Lithotherm tiles were manufactured using waste brick as the aggregate. This was environmentally a fantastic use for reject bricks but because of the unusual thermal characteristics of brick they found that the tiles enabled the creation of a quick and easy to install, rapidly responsive, floor heating system.

The tiles do not require any drying and so can be covered as soon as the pipework has been installed and tested. This makes for an underfloor heating system that can prevent delays in projects as it doesn’t require any long curing periods.

What is their support like?

The system is very simple and is essentially only two components, tiles and pipe. Consequently, most of the complicated elements of the installation are undertaken by heating engineers who are designing the rest of the heating system.

They have good basic support from the distributor in the UK who has lots of experience with installing the system in the UK. We also have good contacts with companies selling compatible components making it simple to swap this system with screwed systems.

What do they specialise in?

Lithotherm specialise in underfloor heating. They have the range of pre-cast, screed replacement  tiles but they also have a lightweight timber based panel for suspended floors.

In addition to the recycled brick tiles Lithotherm have created tiles based on Basalt. Germany apparently has lots of extinct volcanoes which contain this wonderfully dense rock which is perfect for storing heat. In addition, Basalt is very strong so this has boosted the robustness of the system.

Next on the list of materials is pumice, another volcanic rock. Although this is a much lower density stone it does allow the installation of the system on to suspended floors. This gives excellent acoustic insulation, boosts thermal mass but will not require the exponential increase in joist sizes required by the brick or basalt versions.

In summary, they’re rather creative with their systems and materials.

How long have you worked together?

We have worked with Lithotherm for the last 8 years or so. We have a really good relationship with them and their distributor which makes communication and problem solving quick and easy.
