“Superb base coat plaster for just about any plasterable surface. Because it is lime based it is also ideal for breathable systems” – Chris Brookman

Product overview.

Where is it used?

  • Baumit MC55 W can be used to prepare smooth concrete, mineral and synthetic renders and some painted surfaces to receive a render.
  • It can, with Baumit StarTex fibreglass mesh, be used as a base coat for render carriers.
  • It can also be used as a sponged finish render which can either be left as self-colour or decorated.
  • Baumit MC55 W is also suitable to plaster or render wood fibre insulation boards.

How much will you need?

  • Baumit MC55 W has a density of 1.0kg per mm per m² (1mm thickness of plaster over 1m²). Each 25kg bag will cover up to 4m² at 6mm thickness or 8m² at 3mm thickness.

How is it used?

  • Baumit MC55 W should be mixed by a plaster whisk with clean tap water to a smooth consistency and then applied by hand or it can be spray applied by machine.
  • It’s ‘sticky’ nature means it is very easy to apply to a whole range of backgrounds.
  • As a base coat it is applied at around 6-8mm on to carrier boards such as wood fibre insulation boards or cement boards and reinforced with the Baumit StarTex mesh.
  • As a finish coat it is typically applied at a thickness of 3mm on to sound substrates and then left to stiffen.
  • Once stiff the plaster can be sponged with a fine sponge or a steel trowel can be used to produce a finer finish.
Technical Details

How long does it take to set?

  • Setting times vary with temperature and humidity but in the summer the product will usually stiffen enough to finish in a few hours and set hard overnight. In winter stiffening may be extended to more than one day with hardening more than two days.

Material in action.

Baumit MC55 W is a versatile plaster that can be used for many purposes. Here you can see it being used as the reinforcement coat for the Pavatex-Diffutherm wood fibre insulation system. Because it is lime based it is lovely and sticky and bonds extremely well to the surface of the wood fibre boards.

This image also shows how the render coat is ‘combed’ with a notched trowel to ensure it is the correct thickness and also to allow the mesh to be easily bedded into the wet render. This combing, particularly on to wood fibre boards, helps with improving the bond strength between the render and the boards.
