Facade Expanders from Hufer

Hufer Facade Expanders are:-

  • a robust and simple way to install insulation on to uneven facades.
  • able to 'plumb-up' walls which lean or are not flat.
  • suitable for all types of masonry and timber facades.
  • suitable for use with all types of flexible or loose fill insulations.
  • nearly thermal bridge free.

Where are they used?

  • Hufer Facade expanders are used on any masonry or timber facade that requires 165mm or more insulation to achieve the required thermal performance.
  • Used above 300mm from external ground level.
  • Also suitable for increasing the depth of rafters, particularly on historic buildings.

How are they used?

  • Install plinth insulation, such as XPS from the appropriate depth below ground up to 300mm above ground.
  • Working above the plinth insulation level, simply attach the Facade Pockets to the walls with the appropriate fixings, using one at each end of the 2.4m Facade Expanders.
  • Insert the Facade expanders into the pockets and, using a laser level or spirit level, ensure that the Facade Expander is in the correct position.
  • Facade Expanders must sit at least 45mm in to the Facade Pockets.
  • Insert 5No. 25-30mm long by 4mm diameter screws through the sides of each Facade Pocket to secure the Facade Expander.
  • Once the expanders are installed and all openings have been trimmed around with timber or ply, the insulation batts can be added between the expanders. A breathable membrane should then be added to keep the insulation dry before applying the finish to the wall
  • Wood fibre boards, such as UdiSPEED, can be fixed to the surface to create a rendered facade which can also be filled with loose-fill insulation such as Warmcel/Thermofloc or SteicoCel.
  • Alternatively, UdiTOP wood fibre sarking boards can be added to allow a clad facade to be created.

Each Facade Expander is 2.4m long and consist of a 60 x 60mm square section of timber with a spine projecting from the centre. The spines come in the following lengths:- 65mm, 85mm, 105mm, 145mm, 185mm and 225mm. Please add 60mm to these figures to calculate the overall depth of the expander.

Each Facade Pocket consist of a 40mm thick by 60mm wide section of timber with two projecting ply spines, between which the above expanders are inserted. The spines are either 45, 65 or 85mm in depth and the correct choice will depend on the overall variation in the surface that you need to accommodate.

To calculate the overall depth of the expanders and the pockets add a minimum of 40mm to the depth of the above expanders. E.g. the expander with the 65mm spine will be 60mm + 65mm + 40mm = 165mm overall as a minimum.

This can appear quite confusing so please contact us if you're not sure which combinations you need for your facade.
