About us

Back to Earth was started in 1995 (and is still run) by Chris Brookman, a Chemistry graduate, and was originally a building company specialising construction with sustainable materials such as cob and lime. By 2007 the business had morphed into a materials supplier at which point Back to Earth’s sole business was supplying sustainable building materials.

We believe buildings should be better, healthier, warmer and more relaxing places in which to live, where light and comfort create spaces that inspire and enrich us. The materials that we use to build our homes and offices should have minimal impact on the environment and keep your inside world comfortable and fresh, with little intervention.

We have created a unique product range with materials that combine different acoustic, thermal and durability characteristics. These products allow our customers to create buildings which are both striking but durable, practical but enjoyable, warm and healthy, ensuring that natural materials are no barrier to contemporary or traditional designs.

At Back to Earth we’re committed to providing the highest quality, most energy efficient building materials available to help create the most comfortable and healthy indoor spaces. Many of our products are made from recyclable and recycled materials, ensuring the minimum impact on the environment and allowing you to create a true eco home.

The materials and systems you see here are an investment into the fabric of your home, one that helps reduce your reliance on heating, cooling and excessive ventilation. The products are selected from companies who demonstrate high levels of both technical and practical understanding. This ensures we can give you the help you need to use them and that you’ll be happy with the final results.

We take a ‘Fabric First’ approach to construction which focuses on the materials used to build or renovate your home before deciding on the systems that will heat, ventilate and cool it. Our focus is on roof, wall and floor insulation and how they can help keep you warm in winter, cool in summer and improve resilience. This way we can help you create highly efficient, low energy or Passivhaus homes which stay comfortable in a warming world.

The solutions we offer at Back to Earth are practical, robust and above all, simple. We offer design and installation guidance on all of our products so if these materials and systems are new to you or you need any advice, just call or email us with any questions and we’ll do our best to help.

CPD Training Sessions

We offer free CPD training sessions to Architectural practices across Devon and Cornwall. These sessions cover how to specify, source and use sustainable building materials effectively. Sessions are run by sustainable building specialist, Chris Brookman.

"Chris really does have an immense amount of knowledge. He really helped us think more clearly about our use of materials. The sessions are well structured, inclusive and practical. We would certainly recommend Chris for CPD’s in this area."

Our CPD (Career Professional Development) sessions are project based, as we find it makes them more useful and relevant to those attending.

In consideration of this, please get in touch to tell us about a particular project or scenario you are working on.

The information you provide will help us tailor the CPD, so you can get the very most from the session.
