Chimneys are one of the most common yet overlooked sources of heat loss in older homes, and in a retrofit context almost every property will have at least one to deal with. Despite their cosy associations, an unaddressed chimney creates…
Mixing external and internal wall insulation on the same building is a question that comes up regularly — typically where a property has an attractive front elevation that the owner doesn’t want to clad, but plainer sides and rear that…
In this quick fire round of Can I Just Ask…, we tackle five of the most common wood fibre insulation questions in one go. Can it actually be recycled? How is it made — and what’s the difference between the…
When retrofitting older buildings, one of the big challenges is reducing heat loss through solid masonry walls without creating moisture problems. Adding internal wall insulation (IWI) helps with energy efficiency — but it can also trap moisture inside the masonry,…
The default position for OSB in a timber frame wall is on the outside of the frame — it’s simply easier for timber framers to work with during construction, giving them a continuous external surface for membranes and wall ties.…
There are two main methods of moisture analysis used in UK building projects, and choosing the wrong one for the application can lead to seriously misleading results. The simpler and more widely used method is the Glaser analysis, governed by…
It’s an intuitive concern — wood fibre insulation is a natural material, and the assumption that it might attract wood-boring insects or other pests follows logically enough. In practice though, the association doesn’t hold up. The manufacturing process fundamentally changes…
The case for wood fibre insulation rests on three broad pillars: environmental credentials, building performance, and practical usability. From an environmental standpoint, wood fibre is manufactured from waste timber, stores carbon within the building fabric, and represents a far less…
Suspended timber floors are one of the most accessible entry points for improving a home’s energy performance — and one of the most overlooked. Human physiology makes us particularly sensitive to heat loss through our feet, and in many older…
How much internal wall insulation you can safely add is one of the most common questions in retrofit — and one of the most poorly understood. The starting point is wall thickness. A 100mm single-skin brick wall offers very little…
U-value targets for retrofit are often treated as a straightforward regulatory question, but the reality is considerably more nuanced. Building control generally steers projects towards 0.3 W/m²K, with a threshold value of 0.7 — and Part L does allow for…
Continuity of insulation is one of the most important — and most frequently compromised — principles in both retrofit and new build. A common scenario on site is a 170mm joist or rafter cavity filled with 160mm of insulation, with…
