Can I mix wood fibre insulation with PIR? – CIJA? | Ep.46

Retrofit projects often throw up variable specifications — sometimes something’s already been installed and you’re working around it, or there’s pressure to reduce overall build-up thickness. So can wood fibre insulation be combined with PIR or other synthetic insulations?

In flat roofs, a hybrid approach can genuinely make sense — for example, XPS-type insulation seated beneath the roof covering (particularly on green or gravel roofs), augmented with a more natural fibre material in the rafter zone. As always, flat roofs need project-specific analysis, but there’s a legitimate use case here.

Pitched roofs are more nuanced. Substituting some PIR into a wood fibre build-up can reduce overall thickness while still hitting your target U-value — from a functional standpoint, it works, provided airtightness is well controlled. But U-value is only one factor. Every deviation away from a full wood fibre build-up tends to reduce thermal mass (and summer overheating protection), acoustic insulation, and fire performance. So while it’s possible, the recommendation is generally to stick with one material where you can.

At interfaces — say, wood fibre on a wall meeting PIR or XPS elsewhere — there’s no inherent problem, as long as each specification is internally consistent and the junction between the two maintains continuity of the insulation and airtightness layers.
