Retrofit projects often throw up variable specifications — sometimes something’s already been installed and you’re working around it, or there’s pressure to reduce overall build-up thickness. So can wood fibre insulation be combined with PIR or other synthetic insulations? In…
In this episode, Chris and Andy look at why positive input ventilation (PIV), despite being widely used in retrofit projects, generally isn’t recommended alongside internal wall insulation (IWI). Andy explains that PIV works by pressurising the indoor space to push…
Flat roofs are one of the most technically demanding roof types to get right, and the membrane you choose has a bigger impact on long-term performance than most people realise. In this episode of Can I Just Ask?, Chris and…
Internal wall insulation is one of the most common retrofit interventions in the UK, but it’s also one of the most frequently misapplied. A November report from DESNZ highlighted a failure rate of around 30% in IWI installed under government…
Overheating in well-insulated homes is a growing issue in the UK, and one that catches many homeowners and builders off guard. As the climate shifts and sharp heat events become more frequent, the assumption that good insulation equals a comfortable…
PAS 2035 is the government-backed framework that sets out how retrofit projects in the UK should be planned, delivered, and overseen. Introduced to address the well-documented failures of earlier retrofit programmes, it establishes a structured process that runs from the…
In this episode of Can I Just Ask…, we take on a question we hear a lot from people using natural materials: does wood fibre internal wall insulation improve indoor air quality? The honest answer is indirectly, yes — but…
The single most important principle when preparing a wall for internal wall insulation is achieving continuous contact between the back face of the insulation and the wall surface — no voids, no bridged gaps, no variable depths that leave sections…
The short answer to whether wood fibre insulation can be applied to wet walls is no — and understanding why matters as much as the answer itself. Wood fibre does genuinely useful things with moisture: it buffers it, redistributes it,…
In this episode of Can I Just Ask…, we tackle a question we hear almost daily from people planning internal wall insulation: can I use my parge coat as my airtightness layer? A parge coat or levelling plaster can be…
