EBB clay boards for walls and ceilings

EBB Clay boards are:-

  • a 22mm board which is easy to use, cut and fix.
  • great for buffering high humidity and adding thermal mass to a building
  • possibly the best sound insulation boards around
  • a lower embodied energy alternative to plaster board or other gypsum boards.
  • highly fire resistant, A1 rated.

Product overview

Where is it used?

  • Internally as a walling or ceiling board.
  • Between bedrooms and bathrooms to reduce sound transmission.
  • Bathroom and kitchen ceilings to buffer excess humidity.
  • Stud partitions to boost thermal mass and acoustic absorption.

How is it used?

  • EBB Clay boards should be fixed using either drywall screws or stainless screws (depending on plaster to be applied) to a timber frame at a maximum of 625mm centres for walling and 417mm centres for ceiling applications.
  • 36mm plastic or stainless steel washers should also be used for ceiling applications.
  • As with all boarding, vertical joints should be staggered by at least 1 stud to avoid cracking.
  • Once the EBB Clay boards are installed they can be plastered with either lime based plasters (use stainless steel fixings) or clay based plasters (normal drywall screws are fine for this), such as Baumit Viton Fein, finished with Rapido white clay finish plaster.
  • The joints should be reinforced with 100mm wide reinforcing, bedded in the plaster, although fully meshing the base coat works best.

How much will you need?

  • The EBB Clay boards are 1250 x 625mm and 22mm thick, they cover an area of 0.78 m² per board. Allow at least 5% for wastage.

Frequently asked questions

Are they heavy?

The boards themselves weigh around 23kg each so need careful handling and for ceiling applications should be installed with a plasterboard lift.

What happens if they get wet?

  • EBB clay boards should not be allowed to get wet as they soften and can lose structural integrity. If they get wet on the pallet, ensure they are allowed to dry fully before trying to move them.

What is their thermal conductivity?

The clay boards are not designed to be a thermal insulator but their thermal conductivity is around 0.47 W/mK, similar to many lime or clay plasters.
