Floor Insulation

Breathable insulated floors for old and new buildings — whether you have a solid ground floor or a suspended timber floor.

Overview

The right way to insulate a floor depends on how it is built. We supply two breathable floor systems: one for solid ground floors and one for suspended timber floors. Both are designed to manage moisture safely, which matters in older buildings where floors often have no damp proof membrane.

Solid floors: LithoGlas replaces a concrete slab and PIR insulation with a free-draining layer of recycled FG40 Foamglass aggregate, topped with wood fibre boards and Lithotherm underfloor heating tiles. There is no concrete pour and no drying time, and the floor can be finished as soon as it is laid. It suits renovations with earth or failing concrete floors, and self-builds.

Suspended timber floors: flexible wood fibre insulation is fitted between the joists, supported by a breathable membrane below and sealed with an airtight vapour control membrane above. It can be installed from above by lifting the floorboards, or from below where the void is accessible, and it cuts both heat loss and draughts.

Not sure which you have? A solid floor sounds dull and feels hard underfoot; a suspended floor usually has floorboards over joists, with air bricks in the outside walls ventilating the void below.

Benefits

  • Systems for both solid and suspended timber floors
  • Breathable build-ups that protect walls from moisture
  • Cut heat loss and draughts at floor level
  • Compatible with low-energy underfloor heating
  • LithoGlas: no concrete slab and no drying time
  • Suspended floors: install from above or below
