Multipor IWI

A non-combustible, breathable mineral insulation board system for the inside of masonry walls, fully bonded to the wall and finished with lime plaster.

Overview

Multipor internal wall insulation uses Multipor TIPwall M4 mineral insulation boards, made from lime, sand, cement and water. The boards are bonded across their full surface to the wall with Multipor FIX X710 lightweight mortar, so there is no air gap behind them and no need for mechanical fixings. A reinforced coat of FIX X710 with mesh then forms the base for a lime plaster, silicate paint or tiled finish.

The system is vapour open and capillary active, with no plastic vapour barrier. Moisture that enters the wall is absorbed and carried back to the room surface, where it can dry out, which keeps the wall at a safe moisture level and helps prevent mould. The boards are A1 non-combustible and give off no toxic gases or smoke in a fire, so they can be used in escape routes and tall buildings.

Multipor suits all types of historic and modern masonry, including damp walls and natural stone. It is ideal for listed buildings and exposed brick façades, schools, churches and offices, or anywhere external insulation isn’t possible. Where there is a lot of timber in the wall, our wood fibre systems are usually a better choice.

How it’s installed

Multipor boards are bonded across their full surface, which is essential for the system to work and means no extra fixings are needed. The boards are light and easy to cut, so rooms can be insulated quickly and one at a time.

Step 1

Prepare the wall

Remove loose plaster, gypsum plaster, paint and wallpaper. Level the wall with Baumit SanovaPor (or KZP 65) if needed. Fit Multipor hemp felt strips where the boards meet other surfaces, to decouple them.

Step 2

Bond the boards

Mix Multipor FIX X710 and comb a 5mm full-surface layer onto the back of each board. Press it to the wall and slide it into place, keeping the butt and bed joints tightly closed.

Step 3

Reinforce the surface

Sand down any unevenness and sweep off the dust, priming if needed. Apply a reinforcing coat of FIX X710 and embed the reinforcing mesh, with fabric corner angles at openings.

Step 4

Finish

Once cured, apply a lime finishing plaster in thin layers and felt it off, or a lime smoothing coat. Finish with a vapour-open silicate paint to keep the system breathable.

Because the boards are bonded, wiring can often stay in place, with simple back box extensions.

Finishes and special areas

The reinforced surface can be lime plastered, painted with vapour-open silicate paint or tiled. Clay plasters and drywall boards are also possible.

  • Tiling: up to 25kg/m² including adhesive, with about 4 insulation fixings per m² (at least 60mm discs) fixed through the wet reinforcing coat.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms are normally treated as dry rooms. Behind baths and showers, apply a liquid waterproofing over the reinforcing coat.
  • Drywall finish: timber battens can be fixed through the boards into the wall with suitable fixings and lined with 10mm Fermacell, which can take heavy loads and leaves space for sockets.
  • Timber-framed buildings can use the Multipor clay system with clay mortar.
